God’s Word In Your Mouth Is Powerful

Hebrews 4:12 says For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword…

I was studying that verse recently and the Holy Spirit prompted me to look up the word two-edged.  It is the Greek word dístomos.  Dístomos is a compound word that is comprised of , which means two and stomos which means mouth.  When you put all of that together, it means God’s word is a two mouthed sword.

God’s word is already in His mouth, but it comes alive when we put if in our mouth and declare it.  This isn’t to say God’s word is dead when we aren’t declaring it.  It’s just not alive in our circumstances when we stay silent.  Let me give you an example to explain.  Look at 1 Kings 17:1:

And Elijah the Tishbite, of the inhabitants of Gilead, said to Ahab, “As the Lord God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, except at my word.”

After Elijah made that statement, it stopped raining in Israel for over three years. That’s powerful, but here’s what I want you to see.  Elijah didn’t just say anything that came to mind.  Elijah quoted from the word of God, specifically Deuteronomy 11.  Look at these verses:

16 Take heed to yourselves, lest your heart be deceived, and you turn aside and serve other gods and worship them, 17 lest the Lord’s anger be aroused against you, and He shut up the heavens so that there be no rain, and the land yield no produce, and you perish quickly from the good land which the Lord is giving you.

Deuteronomy 11 was written over 1,000 years before Elijah lived.  It prophesied that if the children of Israel got into idolatry and worshipped other gods, God would shut up the heavens and the land wouldn’t produce.  These principles were contained within the scripture, but they didn’t come to pass until a man of God, put God’s word in his mouth and began to decree it!

God’s word comes alive when we put it in our mouth!  This is why we need to speak His promises over our lives.  His promises include righteousness, peace, healing, deliverance, and prosperity.  These are contained within the scripture, but we will not experience the full off effect of them in our lives until we declare them out of our mouths!

God’s word is a two-edged sword.  It’s in His mouth and He wants you to put it in yours so He can bring His will to pass in your life!  I hope this article has encouraged you to discover what the promises of God are and to begin to speak them out of your mouth.  If you’d like to learn more about the power of our words, check out this message I taught at Grace Life Church.
