Possess The Promises

Have you ever heard someone say they are believing a promise of God and just waiting on it to manifest?  I’ve heard that a bunch over the years and said it a time or two myself.  Now I want to ask a question.  Is that line of thinking scriptural?  I’ve searched the scriptures far and wide and have yet to find the phrase, “I’m believing and just waiting on the manifestation.”  What a bummer!

Here is what I have found.  When God makes His people a promise, He expects us to possess what He promises.  Look at Joshua 1:3:

3 Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given you, as I said to Moses.

What a powerful passage of scripture.  God told Joshua that every place he walked in the promised land, God had already given it to him.  This meant from God’s perspective it was done, yet Joshua still had to possess the promise.  Over the next several chapters, Joshua sent in spies to Jericho and readied his people to take possession of the first part of the promised land; the city of Jericho.  Before they went to battle, look at what the Lord spoke to Joshua in Joshua 6:2:

And the Lord said to Joshua: “See! I have given Jericho into your hand, its king, and the mighty men of valor.

Again, God told Joshua He had already given Jericho to him, yet Joshua still had to possess the promise by following the Lord’s instructions and taking the city.

This pattern repeats itself multiple times throughout the book of Joshua as God would tell Joshua He had given him a particular city, but then Joshua and the children of Israel still had to go in and fight to take possession of the promise.

The application to us is when God makes us a promise we should rejoice and celebrate, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have to do anything else.  For example, 1 Peter 2:24 says by His stripes we were healed.  From God’s perspective our healing is done as Jesus already paid for it legally on the cross, but God expects us to then go and possess what He has promised.

With healing we would do this by declaring out of our mouth we are healed.  I normally teach people to speak to their injured/diseased body part and curse pain and speak life into it.  I tell them to command the power of God to flow into it.  We should do this until we receive total manifestation and not just wait for the manifestation. An example of this is when Jesus healed the blind man in Mark 8:22-26:

22 Then He came to Bethsaida; and they brought a blind man to Him, and begged Him to touch him. 23 So He took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the town. And when He had spit on his eyes and put His hands on him, He asked him if he saw anything.

24 And he looked up and said, “I see men like trees, walking.”

25 Then He put His hands on his eyes again and made him look up. And he was restored and saw everyone clearly. 26 Then He sent him away to his house, saying, “Neither go into the town, nor tell anyone in the town.”

Jesus ministered to the man once and he received a partial healing.  Jesus didn’t tell Him, “Praise God the rest of it is coming, just wait on the manifestation.”  Jesus then ministered to hims again and he received his sight.  Jesus possessed the promise!

This is just one example to illustrate how to possess a promise.  This truth also applies to other areas of life like our finances, mental health, relationships, destiny, and much more.  I want to encourage you to dig into the word of God and find out what the promises are and then seek God about how to possess them.  Whatever you do, please don’t sit idly by waiting on the Lord to bring things into manifestation when He expects you to do your part and possess the promise.

One last verse, I promise.  Sorry, I thought I was done writing and then I got stirred.  Look at Galatians 6:7:

7 Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.

Did you notice this verse says whatever we sow, we will reap.  It doesn’t say God will reap the harvest for us as He has delegated that responsibility to you and me!  When He tells us to reap, it means He gave us the ability to do it so let’s get into the word and prayer and go possess that which God has promised us!
