Scientists tell us there is an invisible line at a given altitude above sea level known as the “snake line.” No snake can live above this line. This means when a human climbs high enough in the mountains they will eventually climb above the snake line and no longer be in danger of snakes. As powerful as this natural truth is, there is also a snake line in the spirit. Look at Ephesians 1:21-22:
20 which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, 21 far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come.
This passage says that Jesus has been raised into the heavenly realm above all principality, powers, mights, and dominions. Jesus has been raised above the devil, therefore Jesus lives above the snake line. As awesome as that is, look at what the scripture says about you and me:
Ephesians 2:6 and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,
This passage says that you and I have also been raised above the snake line as we are seated in heavenly places next to Jesus! When we understand this truth, it will give us boldness in life. This truth will give us the faith to step out and do the impossible since we are above the snake line. Satan can try to harm us, but we have authority over him and can tell him to leave our situation! He’s not permitted above the snake line!
Knowing this truth also helps deliver us from the fear of the devil. Many folks I have ministered to over the years have a major fear of the devil and his demons. This causes them to live in fear and dread because they are afraid of the devil messing with them. Interestingly enough, this fear actually invites the devil in because he likes an easy target. When we know who we are and whose we are, however, we will be delivered from the spirit of fear and will live above the snake line where no demonic spirit can harm us!
The key to staying above the snake line in this physical life renewing our mind to God’s word. When we stay full of the word and remind ourselves of our identity and authority as believers no demon in hell can stop us from fulfilling God’s plan for our lives. When we stop meditating the word, however, we will allow our thought life to drop below the snake line and give Satan an opening to attack us. There is no condemnation if that happens. It has certainly happened to me more times than I want to admit. If that does happen to you get back into the word and God will elevate your thought life back above the snake line once again!
I hope this article has encouraged and challenged you to live in your true identity as a believer and to stay full of the word of God. If you’d like to learn more about the power of the renewed mind, check out this message I taught at Grace Life Church.
