What’s In Your Hand?

One of the questions we all ask is, “How do I get from where I am to where I’m going?” Sometimes the answer is easy, but other times it feels like our destination is a million miles or a million dollars away from where we currently are. Often, in the difficult situations when things seem impossible, it’s difficult to figure out what our first step should be. I have good news, no matter how challenging the situation, there is always an answer and the answer already rests in the palm of our hand.A great example of this is the story of the feeding of the 5,000 found in Matthew 14. Jesus and the disciples went to a deserted place, so he could mourn the death of John the Baptist. A crowd of people followed Him and then Jesus began to minister to them and heal the sick. After many hours the disciples came to Jesus and told him it was late and he should send the multitudes to the villages so they could go buy some food to eat. Jesus had a different idea, however, and told the 12 disciples, “You give them something to eat.”Talk about an impossible situation. The 12 disciples are in a deserted place with limited resources and Jesus is telling them to give 5,000 people something to eat. They didn’t have enough money to buy food for the multitude (John 6:7) and even if they did, they were in the desert. Where were they going to buy it? Don’t just read over that. Think about it and put yourself in their shoes. What would you do? How impossible does that seem? Too many people to feed, not enough resources and seemingly nowhere to get the resources – where would you start?Look at what Jesus did. He asked the disciples for the thing they had in their hands: five loaves of bread and two fish.17 And they said to Him, “We have here only five loaves and two fish.” 18 He said, “Bring them here to Me.”This is a principle we must learn. Whenever God asks us to do something that is impossible, and everything seems out of our reach, the answer always rests in the palm of our hand.Look at what Jesus did next:19 Then He commanded the multitudes to sit down on the grass. And He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He blessed and broke and gave the loaves to the disciples; and the disciples gave to the multitudes. When Jesus received the food that was in the disciples’ hands, he looked to heaven. Why did he do this? He needed to get a heavenly vision of the situation. The Greek word for look means to recover sight. Jesus had eyes just like the 12 disciples did. He too saw limited resources and a great multitude. But instead of putting his focus on natural things, he looked beyond that and recovered his spiritual sight and received a heavenly vision, so he could release heavenly provision.Jesus then blessed what he had in his hand. He blessed the five loaves and two fish. He blessed the seemingly little he had instead of cursing it. He spoke a blessing and food began to multiply! This is where many of us miss it. We don’t get a heavenly vision of the situation and we curse what is in our hand. Whenever God asks us to do the impossible, He always puts the answer in our hand, but unfortunately many people curse the answer.James 3:10 10 Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so.When we curse what we have in our hand, we make it impossible for God to do the impossible for us. Why? Because God requires faith. Faith doesn’t walk by natural sight, but rather faith sees the unseen realm.I have personally seen this principle of blessing the little I have in my hand work many times in my life. It has caused me to experience God’s miraculous provision. I recently went through a really challenging financial situation and as I prayed, I told God, “I see what you want me to do, but I don’t have to money!” Immediately the Holy Spirit reminded me of the story of the loaves and the fish. He impressed me to look at the money I did have and begin to bless it! Bless what was in my hand. Within a few hours, God had moved miraculously to allow me to do something that previously seemed impossible. As, I close I want to encourage you to believe God big today. He wants to do the impossible in your life and he will use the thing he has put in your hand to do it. When you feel like you don’t have enough finances, bless the finances you have. When you don’t feel like you have the right relationships, bless the relationships you have. When you feel like you don’t have enough experience or wisdom, bless the experience and wisdom you do have. As you speak blessing, watch as God multiples the little and turns it into miraculous provision. God will always use what is in your grasp to take you to the place only He can send you!
